FAQ: How can I make the transition from an older version to TypeIt4Me 7 as smooth as possible?
TypeIt4Me 7 won’t automatically replace any existing versions you might have already installed on your Mac. They can happily co-exist if you just leave the old version(s) dormant. However, there is some preparation you can do if you want to keep things clean and ensure you don’t end up in a muddle, perhaps with two different versions launching automatically and tripping over each other. Before you download and install TypeIt4Me 7 here’s how to get your older version(s) out of the way and avoid possible interference down the line:
- Open your existing TypeIt4Me version(s)
- In Settings > General make sure the ‘Open TypeIt4Me at Login’ checkbox is not ticked
- Either make sure all your snippet sets are in the ‘Sets in iCloud Drive’ pane (so TypeIt4Me 7 can pick them up automatically) or 2-finger click on your local ‘Sets on this Mac’ then click ‘Reveal in Finder’ to open a window containing your .typeit4me data files. Move or copy those files to your desktop so you can import them into TypeIt4Me 7 later.
- Quit any and all running copies of TypeIt4Me (<— important)
- Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
- Remove any TypeIt4Me version(s) that are in the list of apps that are allowed to control your computer (select the app(s) in the list then click the minus button)
- Move the old TypeIt4Me app(s) out of your Applications folder (feel free to keep older versions around somewhere else on your Mac; deleting is not necessary)
Now you’re all set
Once you’ve done the above, you’re ready to download and get started with TypeIt4Me 7. As soon as it’s installed and launched it will seamlessly pick up any snippets you’ve already stored in iCloud while using an older TypeIt4Me version. However, because it’s sandboxed, it can’t just help itself to all of your existing settings and data created in TypeIt4Me 6 or older versions.
Your custom app settings (e.g. which triggers to use / not use, special behaviours etc) will not be carried over automatically. You’ll need to set those up again the way you prefer in the new version, which also has some new options to choose from.
The first time TypeIt4Me 7 opens, it will walk you through some introductory welcome screens that explain the basic modes of operation. You’ll be asked if you want to grant accessibility access: this is required if you want TypeIt4Me to be able to expand your typed abbreviations for you. Click the Allow Access button to bring up a system dialog that confirms TypeIt4Me is requesting permission to control your Mac using accessibility features. Clicking the Open System Settings button in this dialog will take you straight to the right place to authorize TypeIt4Me to expand your typed abbreviations. To do that, just switch its toggle on.

If at any point you think you might have messed up the installation and want to start over, that’s OK – just make sure you quit TypeIt4Me before removing its accessibility permission. Take care not to remove the app from the accessibility list while TypeIt4Me is still running.
