PSA: changes to keyboard shortcuts in macOS Sequoia

Posted on September 29, 2024

Hi, there.

By now, many of you will have taken the plunge and installed Apple’s recently released Sequoia on your Macs. We’d like to give a heads up to those of you who make use of hot key shortcuts in third party apps like ours to quickly open windows, toggle features on/off or access settings. Just in case you aren’t aware: Apple has made a significant change to keyboard shortcuts in macOS Sequoia 15.0. In third party apps these may no longer contain only one modifier key if that modifier is shift or option.

A few customers have been in touch to report that their chosen keyboard shortcuts for accessing various functions in TypeIt4Me and sonorOS no longer work since updating to Sequoia. This is not a bug. It’s a direct consequence of Apple’s recent change. If your shortcuts stop working after updating to Sequoia, it probably means you’ll need to change your hot key combos to include a different modifier key such as command or control.

Just to be clear: we’re not talking about TypeIt4Me abbreviations or snippets here. The affected keyboard shortcuts in macOS Sequoia are user-defined hot key combos for quickly accessing features in apps not made by Apple.

For example, if you’ve been pressing option-1 to open TypeIt4Me’s main window, this will no longer work in Sequoia. You’ll need to change it to something like control-option-1, or command-option-1 instead. Yeah, it’s quite a pain in the butt and it makes single-handed operations more awkward, but hey…Apple’s gonna Apple.

In other news, we are still polishing TypeIt4Me 7.0 with the valuable help of our small army of volunteer beta testers. Thank you for bearing with us! We really appreciate your patience.
