Good day to you fine folks making your way out there in the Macosphere. It’s been an eventful week, wouldn’t you say? Here at ES headquarters we’ve just about recovered from Tuesday’s spectacular Apple media event, though we almost had to be revived with smelling salts after the big reveal of the new Retina display iPad mini. What a razor sharp beauty.
Of course, the other big news was the launch of Mavericks. In the wake of Apple’s newest operating system being released for public consumption, we’ve been contacted by a number of customers asking how to make TypeIt4Me play nicely with OS X 10.9. As some of you have already discovered, Apple has re-jigged the Accessibility system settings in Mavericks and TypeIt4Me is disabled immediately after upgrading. Don’t worry, though, for help is at hand. All you need to do to get it working normally again is follow these simple steps:
- Open System Preferences
- Click the Security & Privacy preference pane
- Click the Privacy tab
- Navigate to the Accessibility section
- Click the padlock icon and enter your admin password if required
- Tick the checkbox next to TypeIt4Me.app (see the screenshot below)
- Close the System Preferences window, quit TypeIt4Me and relaunch it.
That’s all there is to it. TypeIt4Me should now work normally again and you ought not to encounter any further issues. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience if this has troubled you. We’ll shortly be releasing an updated Mavericks-savvy version of TypeIt4Me, but we’re posting these instructions so as not to leave anyone high and dry in the meantime. If you do run into any other unexpected hiccups, we’ll be happy to troubleshoot them with you.
Hopefully this allays any fears you may have had about upgrading to OS X 10.9 and losing the use of your TypeIt4Me abbreviations. If that’s all that’s been holding you back, we’d encourage you to take the plunge and install Mavericks. Our experience so far is that it offers great performance improvements overall; it’s even breathed new life into some of the wheezy older machines we keep lying around for sentimental reasons testing purposes. Surf’s up…enjoy!
[Edit: a few people have found that even after following these steps TypeIt4Me remains disabled. You may need to log out and then log back in. If it *still* won’t cooperate, try opening your TypeIt4Me preferences, click on the Expansion tab and ensure the checkbox for ‘Disable keyboard expansion’ is *not* selected. There appears to be a bug that switches it on for some people – we’ll look to fix that in the next release.]

Despite following these instructions (several times!), still no joy for me.
What to try next? I even moved the .pref file (no joy). On a test account it works fine.
Suggestions, please?
Hi Edd, sorry to hear you’re still having trouble. It might be worth opening your TypeIt4Me preferences, clicking the Expansion tab and making sure that the ‘Disable keyboard expansion’ checkbox is not selected. If that doesn’t seem to be the culprit, send an email to support at ettoresoftware.store and we’ll follow up with you to see if we can figure out what’s going on.
Works like a charm! Thanks, been looking for a while :)
Glad to hear it :)
That last [edit] did the trick here as well. Been struggling for a few days (since Mavericks launch, duh) to get it working. Satisfied now again!
Thanks guys, keep up the good work!
Thanks Gerard, glad we were able to help you. Apologies for any frustration the experience may have caused.
Excellent and simple instructions. Worked right away. Well done. Cheers
Hi Guy – that was it! Thanks!
My computer is set to German and it didn’t occur to me what I was reading…
That’s great to hear, glad we got there in the end. Thanks for bearing with us, Edd.
Hello! Ever since upgrading to Mavericks line break no longer works… I used to have my name and address in multiple lines associated with an abbreviation; when I type it now, I get all the information in one single line (no breaks). Tried recreating the abbreviation to no avail… Help!
Hi Marcos, that is odd. Sorry to hear TypeIt4Me is not behaving itself, this is the first we’ve heard of the line breaks problem you describe. Riccardo will follow up with you by email to get to the bottom of things and remedy the situation. Thanks for bearing with us.
Thanks, works perfectly.
Quitting wasn’t enough, t had to log out before it worked.
Hi Dennis, thanks for letting us know. Pleased to hear you got it working.
After Mavericks update keyboard expansion does not work.
I’ve setup the new accessibility – privacy – Typeit4me settings OK
I’ve confirmed the “do not expand” box is blank.
Dunno
It works when I manually select a shortcut from the drop-down menu.
What to try next? Delete a pref file maybe? I miss it!
Thanks
Hi Neal, sorry to hear you’re still having trouble. If you’ve also tried logging out and logging back in after quitting TypeIt4Me and keyboard expansion still doesn’t work, please send an email to support @ettoresoftware.store specifying which version of TypeIt4Me you have (the Mac App Store version is 5.3.2, the one from our website is 5.2.2) and we’ll follow up with you as soon as possible.
Guy– You saved my life! You ROCK. TypeIt4Me has saved my 984,073 keystrokes over the last 3 years!!!!
Excellent, glad to hear it’s working well for you. I’ll pass your compliments on to Riccardo – he does the heavy lifting :)
Yeah! That did the trick. Thank you!
Excellent, glad to hear it.
Everything was working fine until today. I have v. 5.2.2 (57) and Mavericks.
I have checked:
Accessibility settings.
I’ve confirmed the “do not expand” box is blank.
Quitted the program and loged off.
Works manually from the drop-down menu.
What else?
Thanks!
Hello Hector, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. One more thing you could try is going into Triggers in your TypeIt4Me preferences, then toggle all the available delimiters off and on again (i.e. press the All button, then the None button). This has solved the issue in some cases. If you’re still having trouble after that, please email support@ ettoresoftware.store and Riccardo will follow up with you to identify the problem.
I’m having the same problem as Marcos – expansion works, but line breaks are ignored, so my multi-line signature comes out as one line. Using version 5.2.2 with Mavericks on a 2010 MacBook Air.
Hi Chuan, that is strange behaviour indeed – many apologies for the inconvenience. Riccardo will follow up with you by email to figure out what’s causing it and provide a fix.
Thanks a lot!
Add me to the TypeIt4Me-Mavericks problem. Sigh…
Hi Mike, sorry to hear you’re having trouble with Mavericks. If you’ve tried all of the steps outlined in the FAQ and this post and none of them have remedied your problem, please send an email detailing how TypeIt4Me is misbehaving to support@ and Riccardo will follow up with you to troubleshoot the issue. Many thanks for bearing with us.
does typeit4me 4.2.1 work with mavericks?
Hi Paul, to use TypeIt4Me with Mavericks you will need to upgrade to the latest version.
When I go to the Security settings, Typeit4me does not appear for me to check off. I can’t open the preferences pane of Typeit4me either (through System Preferences). I get an error: “Could not load TypeIt4Me preference pane.” How do I know what version I’m using if I can’t open the program? I don’t even know if I’m on the latest version…
Hi Wade – and seasons greetings! If there is still a TypeIt4Me preferences pane in your system settings then it sounds like you have an older pre-5.x version that won’t be compatible with Mavericks. To continue using TypeIt4Me with OS X 10.9 you’ll need to upgrade to the latest version. You can download a free 30-day trial here: http://ettoresoftware.store/products/typeit4me/downloads/TypeIt4Me.dmg. Try installing that and let us know how you get on. If you have any further trouble, please send an email to support@ ettoresoftware.store and we’ll do our best to help.
Best wishes,
Guy
I’ve tried all these steps with no luck… are there any other possible ideas?
Thanks,
Paul
Hi Paul, sorry to hear you’re still having trouble. If none of the steps outlined above have worked even after logging out and / or rebooting, please email support@ettoresoftware.store specifying which version of TypeIt4Me you’re using and the Mac model you have. Riccardo will follow up with you to troubleshoot your problem.
It was working from the menu for me, from power-on. Now appears to be working from macro keystrokes.
Brand new MacBook Pro with Mavericks. Vs 4.2 of TypeIt4Me. Looks like I’m a bit behind on versions, but it seems to be running fine. Sure love TypeIt4Me!
Very glad to hear this, Ron :)
Step list worked, but no typeit4me activity.
Then I discovered that my set had disappeared.
Turns out, when there are no sets, the app appears to not be working.
Recreated the set and now all is well.
Seems strange that I am the only one where this happened.
Was your set stored in iCloud? See our post concerning reports of sudden disappearance of iCloud sets.
Hooray, the hint about disabling “Disable keyboard expansion” has finally helped to make my TypeIt4Me work again on Mavericks.
In German it’s the option “Nicht per Tastatur erweitern” by the way.
Very glad to hear we were able to help you :)
HINT for you Mav users that TypeIt4Me still isn’t working in, despite doing all the above “fixes” (all of which I did, with no luck in getting it to work):
Background info: I have a bunch of subfolders I made inside of the main OSX Applications folder, into many of which I have different apps, whichever are appropriate. For example, in my old 10.6.8, & then my new Mav that I upgraded to just a couple of days ago, I had TypeIt4Me inside of my “Applications -> TEXT+CLIPBRD UTILS” folder. In 10.6.8, TypeIt4Me worked fine that way. In Mav though, guess what…… like more & more apps in higher & higher releases of OSX, IT HAS TO BE INSIDE THE MAIN APPLICATIONS FOLDER *ONLY*, and NOWHERE ELSE.
So now, guess I’ll just put an alias to my TypeIt4Me app that’s now inside my very messy & *very* crowded Applications folder.
Mine’s fixed now…….
KK
Thanks for this! Saved my ass!
thanks for this help page. very helpful. now i can work with mavericks, as it looks … i really can’t live without ti4m.
How can I prevent an abbreviation from expanding? Holding down the shift key while typing a space as described in the manual doesn’t work any more.
I’m using version 5.3.2 on Mavericks OS 10.9.4.
Bob
Pressing shift as you type a space still works in our own tests. Can you email support@ettoresoftware.store so we can try to see why it’s broken for you?
Cannot do this with the control panel as of 10.9.4
PLEASE HELP!!!
(nevermind — figured it out — sorry about comment above!)
I had the same problems like some others. I’ve tried all the hints in this post, but it only worked manually from the drop-down menu, not by typing the shortcut. Tested it both with version 5.3.2 from the app store and 5.2.2 on MacBook Pro and Air (both Mavericks 10.9.4).
Finally, it works for me after toggling off all triggers and leave them toggled off. Maybe this helps.
Karin.
Hi Karin
expansion should work even with triggers on. Can you email support@ettoresoftware.store and we’ll schedule a Skype call to see what might be happening.
So with Mavericks TypeIt4Me won’t run in the background anymore?
Is this correct?
With Mavericks and Yosemite, TypeIt4Me still *does* run in the background. All that has changed is the location in the System Preferences where you need to allow TypeIt4Me to “control your computer” (it’s now under Security & Privacy).
I’ve tried everything, made sure the “disable keyboard expansion” box isn’t checked, made sure it can control my computer, updated to the newest version, etc. I can expand from the menu but not from the keyboard.
Sorry to hear you’re still having difficulties, Rob. Are you using the latest version of TypeIt4Me? We released version 5.4.0 last week; this is a free update for existing users and ought to work fine in Mavericks and Yosemite. If you are running the new version of TypeIt4Me and have tried all the steps listed here, including a reboot, please send an email to support@ettoresoftware.store with full details of your OS and hardware so we can troubleshoot the issues you’re experiencing.
